London – November 28th, 2014: Felipe Calderón, former President of México and Chair of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate issued the following statement before the talks:

“Leaders gathering in Lima have as an opportunity to build stronger economies and to send a clear signal to businesses and investors.”

“There has been significant momentum in the lead-up to this historic 12-day conference. The United States and China, the world’s two largest economies and emitters of greenhouse gases, recently signed a landmark climate agreement. They see that it is in their economic interest to act. Now the world, including other countries, cities and businesses, must build on these commitments.”

“The New Climate Economy report shows it is possible to have better growth and a better climate. It is possible to create jobs, reduce poverty, and reduce the carbon emissions that threaten our future. To achieve this we must make fundamental changes and smart choices.”

“Negotiators in Lima have the opportunity to put us on the right track and to keep up the momentum as we head into a crucial year for the climate. By acting together we can achieve more.”
