Mexico City (May 3, 2016) - Today, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon nominated Mexican Ambassador Patricia Espinosa as the next Executive Secretary of the UN Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Former President of Mexico Felipe Calderón releases the following statement:
I sincerely congratulate Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on having nominated Patricia Espinosa to be the next Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC.
Ambassador Espinosa was a key factor behind the success of COP16 in Mexico in 2010, which set the basis for the Paris Agreement. Her performance then, as in all her previous commitments, provides clear evidence that she has the vision, experience and conviction needed to face the great challenge of climate change.
I also express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the great leadership and tireless efforts of Christiana Figueres against climate change and in favor of our planet.
Felicito muy sinceramente al Secretario General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki Moon, por haber nominado a la Embajadora Patricia Espinosa como Secretaria Ejecutiva de la Convención Marco de Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático.
La Embajadora Espinosa fue una pieza clave en el éxito de la Cumbre COP 16 que se realizó en Cancún en 2010 y con la cuál se establecieron las bases que llevaron al Acuerdo de Paris. El desempeño logrado en esa ocasión, así como en todos sus encargos, es una muestra clara de que cuenta con la visión, capacidad y convicción necesarias para enfrentar el gran reto del cambio climático.
Expreso también mi mayor reconocimiento a Christiana Figueres por su gran liderazgo e incansable trabajo en contra del cambio climático y en favor de nuestro planeta.
