National governments have a critical role to play in delivering better cities. While effective local authorities are essential, national governments will always have key powers and a much greater ability to mobilise finance. It is therefore urgent to design national policies in ways that encourage more sustainable, inclusive cities. Different countries will need different types and combinations of policies to address challenges such as sprawl, air pollution and inequality. The Coalition supports national governments to identify the policies with the most potential to transform cities. Our work on housing explores how governments can deliver more affordable housing while laying the foundations for compact, connected cities. Our work on transport evaluates how governments can harness innovative new technologies, such as electric vehicles and e-hailing, to improve access to services while cutting emissions. And our work on energy evaluates the opportunities to scale renewables which improving access to energy.
