Towns and cities are the dynamic engines of most national economies. But, their power to deliver decent incomes, new jobs and better quality of life is increasingly undermined by choking traffic and air pollution, gross inequality and urban sprawl, and climate shocks such as flooding, heat waves and sea level rise.
Bold national government action to transform cities can both quickly boost economic productivity, jobs and public health, and at the same time slash damaging carbon emissions.
The Coalition is working to assess the scale of these benefits in cities across the global South. Early work shows that there are huge opportunities to reduce energy bills, create jobs, enhance economic productivity and improve air quality.
