Food and Land Use Coalition

The Food and Land Use (FOLU) Coalition's vision is of food and land use systems that create new economic value while simultaneously:

  • Protecting and over time regenerating precious natural resources and complex biophysical systems, including our great forests, peatlands and water systems – while managing increasing demands on the land
  • Shifting our systems from contributing a quarter of our greenhouse gases to becoming a net sink
  • Finding a healthier, less wasteful way to feed over nine billion people by 2050
  • Providing a more prosperous and resilient lifestyle for farmers and their families, in rich and poor countries alike

There is huge opportunity in acting fast. Achieving these outcomes could generate $2.3 trillion and provide 80 million jobs by 2030, according to recent research by the Business and Sustainable Development Commission. Exciting innovations in technology, business, policy and institutional practice already offer opportunities for transformational change. For example, agri-tech advances including micro-irrigation, GPS and sensor technology are dramatically improving resource efficiency and resilience.

FOLU's work aims to inform and expand our options to meet the complex and interrelated goals within transforming food and land use systems.  FOLU seeks to support governments, businesses and communities in using analytical tools and developing associated roadmaps for the transformation of food and land use systems, combining the best science-based modelling with practical policy, market and financing initiatives.

FOLU seeks to build momentum by developing a shared vision of working, sustainable food and land use systems in 2050 to raise our collective ambition and deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals and the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

And FOLU seeks to accelerate action by showing how investing in innovations, in sustainable land practices and in people can deliver sustainable, more integrated food and land use systems and a brighter future for people and the planet.
