Eduardo Paes is the former mayor of Rio de Janeiro, elected to office in 2008. As mayor, Mr. Paes has worked on the social and economic development of the city as well as the organization of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games among other main international events to be held in Rio de Janeiro in the coming years. He is also Chair of the C40.
Mr. Paes has created programmes such as Porto Maravilha to revitalise the port area, Morar Carioca to urbanize Rio de Janeiro’s favelas and UPP Social to develop social programmes in pacified favelas, and established the BRT system, a system of four express corridors for articulated buses that will connect the whole city.
Eduardo Paes started his political career as the head of the Barra da Tijuca and Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro. He then became a city councilman, a congressman, the Municipal Secretary for Environment and State Government’s Secretary for Sports and Tourism in 2007.
He is a graduate of the Law School at the Catholic University of Rio.
